Baynards Primary School Curriculum

Our Curriculum Vision

At Baynards Primary School, our curriculum is designed to give every child the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to thrive. As a small school, we are proud to teach our children in four classes, enabling us to know every pupil as an individual and to tailor learning so that all can succeed. Our curriculum meets the expectations of the National Curriculum and reflects Ofsted’s focus on a broad, ambitious and well-sequenced education for every child.

A Curriculum for All

We firmly believe that every child—regardless of background, need or starting point—deserves a rich and engaging education. Our curriculum is inclusive by design and responsive in practice. Through high-quality teaching, targeted support and careful adaptation, we ensure all pupils are able to access learning and make strong progress.

Curiosity, Knowledge and a Love of Learning

We want our children to develop a genuine curiosity about the world and a thirst for knowledge. Our curriculum is planned to spark interest, encourage questioning and nurture children’s natural desire to explore. From the Early Years to Year 6, we build on what pupils already know, ensuring that learning is meaningful, connected and memorable.

Character, Confidence and Self-Belief

Alongside academic achievement, we place great importance on personal development. We aim for all children to grow in confidence, develop self-belief and recognise their own potential. Through carefully planned experiences, leadership opportunities and a positive school ethos, our pupils learn to persevere, reflect and take pride in their achievements. It is important to us to supplement our curriculum with a broad range of exciting, relevant and creative experiences that enrich our children’s learning. This includes trips, visitors, forest school learning in our school grounds and links with our local community including St Luke’s Church and Thurstable School. We recognise the importance of exposing children to a variety of extra-curricular activities and our pupils will have many opportunities to enjoy a variety of creative and sporting clubs such as football, multi skills, fencing, street dance, singing, board games, art and computing.

Kind, Respectful and Responsible Citizens

Kindness and respect sit at the heart of our school community. Our curriculum helps children understand their place in society, value diversity and behave thoughtfully towards others. We want our pupils not only to succeed academically but also to become caring, responsible individuals who make a positive contribution to their community.

Aspirations and Resilience

We encourage our children to have high aspirations and to understand the steps needed to achieve their goals. Through a curriculum that builds resilience and celebrates effort, pupils learn that success comes from determination, teamwork and a willingness to try new things.

High-Quality Teaching and Support

Our dedicated staff team work together to deliver high-quality teaching across all subjects. Small class structures and strong relationships allow us to provide personalised guidance and support, ensuring every child is challenged, nurtured and able to flourish.

As a small school with mixed-age classes, we cover the curriculum requirement for each class over 2 years (cycle A and cycle B) ensuring all areas are covered by the time a child moves to the next class. We have invested in high-quality schemes of work to support our staff in ensuring there is clear progression and curriculum coverage. These include Kapow, Language Angels and White Rose Maths. These are used as a starting point for teaching and support teacher workload which is a key factor in a smaller setting.
